Reflections from a Stephen Minister

“O Lord…just what do you have planned for me???”  Several years ago I wanted to get more involved at church but I wasn’t sure what suited me, so I prayed and asked for guidance. Then one Sunday morning there was a Stephen Ministry table set up in the narthex…and I listened to that still, small voice inside and took that step of faith to join this ministry.

This past year, as I walked along side my care-receiver, God was continuing to teach me…to sharpen those listening skills, to be compassionate and caring, and most of all, not to judge. My care-receiver and I met every week in the beginning – she knows everything is kept confidential and names and situations are kept between us [and God]. It has been a delight to see how God has worked through her trials and issues. It was essential that my care-receiver know that I would continue to pray for her, reminding her that God would do the healing in His time.

What a joy to know that I am only the care-giver and God is the cure-giver!!!

Another aspect of the Stephen Ministry is the Leadership Training Conference. I am grateful I had the opportunity to attend. This conference made it clear that this ministry can be a vital aspect in our congregation. The pastors will always be the first line of help when you have an emergency, but the Stephen Minister can follow up and be there in your time of need, for however long you need it.

Many people are hurting and we need more members to join this ministry as we continue doing the Lord’s work…we are the listening ear, the hands and feet [here on earth]. This month at Praise we will start another class to become a Stephen Minister. Won’t you prayerfully consider being a part of this important program.
